In this article, we will talk about the world disabled week celebrated on the 10-16th May every year, we will talk about the events performed for disability awareness in the world, and we will talk about what BlindLook does for disabled people.

Let’s start by asking the questions what is the world disabled week that we left behind the last month, Which events are performed for disabled people, World disability week is celebrated on the 10-16thof may, and it is a week where the attention is drawn to the fact that people with disabilities can participate in life like everyone else. It was declared by the United Nations in 1992 and it is celebrated with various events by 156 countries which are members of the United Nations.

Which events are organized during world disability week?

During this week, the problems that disabled people experience are pointed out. In schools, poems about being disabled are read and information is provided about events that cause disability. The disability coordinatorships organize various events for disabled people, and municipalities contact the disabled people and invite them to these events. Sometimes events like soldier’s fun and henna nights for disabled people are organized. The foundations for disabled people also work to inform the people about disability, they organize conferences and symposiums. Our idea is that the disabled should not be remembered only in the disability week, as they will be included in life, at every event, they should be consulted. Everyone should be informed about disability and shouldn’t forget that disabled people can contribute to this world and themselves. Disabled people feel more happy and secure when they are integrated with society. When they have a career, both themselves and their families are proud of them, they can be useful to themselves and the community. So, excluding disabled people and leaving them out of the community causes great harm both for the disabled person and for the community which cannot be overlooked.

Let’s talk about why this week is so important for us. Let’s continue to ask and answer questions to understand the importance of this week.

What is the importance of the world disability week?

The disability week helps increase the awareness of the people about disability, it brings the disabled people together. In this week, foundations find the opportunity to talk about themselves and their services for disabled people.

What are the days of the disability week?

As well as being a week where the society is informed about all the disabilities, there is a separate disability group for each day of the week. If we are to list the days of this week:

• May 10th the opening of the week of disability

• 11th May Blind and visually impaired people day

• 12th May hearing and speech impairment day

BlindLook cooperates with around 40 brands and makes them accessible for blind and visually impaired people. Brands that have simulations in the EyeLearn section of the BlindLook website are on the EyeBrand section. In the blog section of BlindLook, there are articles on visual impairment and other disabilities both in Turkish and English. These articles are informative in nature. As the BlindLook team, we celebrate the week of the individuals who are in any disability group, we work hard every day for the integration of all disabled people into the society and we continue to move along steadily on this path.
