Inequality is discrimination of an individual against other individuals within a society because of gender, race, religion, disability, or culture and treating some individuals as inferior compared to others.
As a result of this discrimination, some individuals are isolated from the rest of society, and they are deprived of opportunities they might otherwise have.
So, what are the consequences of inequality?
First, inequality causes unrest within society. Individuals or groups that are isolated from society hide to protect themselves or they have to act differently from themselves.
The second consequence of inequality is poverty. Because groups are isolated from society, they have trouble accessing resources that the society can access, and this causes poverty.
The inequality problem within the society also impacts accessibility negatively.
After defining inequality, let’s take a look at what the United Nations, which is one of the important organizations that fight inequality, has done about this matter.
Which steps did the United Nations take to fight inequality?
First, in 2015, the United Nations specified 17 goals to make the world more sustainable. The topic of our article is the 10th goal, i.e., reducing of inequality.
The United Nations has advised countries to enact laws to promote equality and to abolish laws that create inequality to perform this goal. Also, it provides food and basic needs aid to those who are in need to eradicate poverty which inequality brings.
